Show optional form fields only on user update

Remove the login form from completed registration

In the case of moderated registration, where the user may not receive access to the site right away, you may find that you want to show the successful registration message, but eliminate the login form that shows below it by default.  Here is a method to do that using the wpmem_login_form filter.

Simple MailChimp integration

Note: this example predates the introduction of the MailChimp Integration extension. I recommend that you use that extension instead as it is far easier to use and also utilizes the latest MailChimp API (version 3.0).
