WP-Members 2.8.7 released

WP-Members 2.8.7 has been released as a production version.  This release hopefully completes the 2.8 project, pending any need for fixes.  While there were front-facing features included in some of the releases, 2.8 focused primarily on rebuilding the admin side of the plugin with new features, improved functionality, and better integration with WP’s native features and admin panels.

If all goes will with this release, I will be moving on to open the 2.9 project that will focus on improving the front-side forms and form functionality.

Creating menus based on login status – alternate version

Over in this post, I described a method of displaying different menus to users based on their login status by setting up your theme to display the different menus.  But isn’t there an easier way that doesn’t involve theme edits?

Yes.  And I’m glad you asked that question.

This method is even easier and simply requires you to drop the included code snippet into your theme’s functions.php file.  You will need to update the variable names in the snippet to reflect your menu names.

There is now a Logged In Menus Extension that makes the entire process as easy as installing a plugin.

Multiple Selection Checkboxes

As of WP-Members 3.1.0, multiple selection checkbox support is an included feature in the plugin. That makes custom implementation such as described here unnecessary for most applications. I am leaving this post here however as there may continue to be users who (1) need a high level of customization that may utilize some or all of this kind of approach, and (2) for users who may not update to 3.1+ who need this support.
Note that there is now a more flexible example of multiple selection checkboxes here. This example is easier to set up and allows for multiple checkbox groups.

Something that will probably become a full feature in the main plugin is multiple selection checkboxes. However, until that becomes a full feature, here is a code snippet that you can use to set this up in your existing installation.

Generic Header Login as a Widget

Using the generic header login HTML as a starting point, I created a header login widget.  This can be used in themes that have a header widget area where the sidebar widget might not fit well.

Consider this a framework to start from.  The code for the form as well as the CSS for styling for form can be customized to fit your theme’s needs. I’ve added lots of comments in the code snippets so you can follow how it is being done. Continue Reading →
